When trombonist Eddie Clark moved home to Kentucky after years in New York doing high profile gigs with the likes of Gil Evans, Mel Lewis and fellow Kentuckian Rosemary Clooney, he knew such future performance opportunities would be somewhat limited. Even though he did what most professional musicians do under similar circumstances, teaching private lessons and working in music retail, he refused to give up on the idea that he could create a cutting edge, creative musical outlet that would not only satisfy his artistic aspirations, but also those of other top notch players in the Louisville area. Those aspirations have resulted in the Louisville Jazz Collective, and Louisville jazz fans will get their first taste of the ensemble’s power and prowess on Monday, June 16th at the Comedy Caravan, as part of their “Jazz Factory Orphans” series.

Clark, whose avant-garde big band, the Outer Orchestra, had performed several times at the recently closed Jazz Factory, was relieved to find a second home with Tom Sobel’s Comedy Caravan, which has long featured musicians of numerous musical genres on the nights it doesn’t host locally, regionally and nationally known stand up comics. In addition to having served as a home to the Roger Dane Orchestra, the Comedy Caravan has presented jazz by pianist James Williams, vocalist Karrin Allyson, and the Count Basie Orchestra.

While saddened by the loss of another locally owned club, Sobel is grateful that jazz fans are rediscovering his artist friendly listening room, replete with padded tables designed to reduce the ambient noise level generally associated with most venues.

“This continues our mission to provide a unique opportunity for audiences to have up close and personal musical experiences in our small theatrical setting,” he said.

The June 16th debut of the Louisville Jazz Collective will take place at 7:30 PM and doors open one hour prior. Tickets are $8 day of show at the Comedy Caravan, 1250 Bardstown Road in the Mid City Mall.
