West Market
Street Stompers
April 18th
Show starts at 5:30 pm
The West Market Street Stompers were a fixture at the Jazz Factory since early spring of 2004 until its recent closing in March of this year. Ken Shapero, owner of Louisville’s premier jazz club, created the whole idea, which is supported weekly by the regulars and supplemented by tourists and passers-by drawn in by the fun. Bandleader Doug Finke took it from there with the music.
The Stompers are made up of some of Louisville’s best jazz musicians. All are veteran players with an interest in all kinds of music and who share in their love for “happy music” and the good times at the Jazz Factory and venues like it.
In contrast to their name, the band does not restrict itself to the “Dixieland” style. This is a swinging band whose repertoire stretches from the very early years of jazz right through the 20th century. A visit to the Jazz Factory on Friday evenings might have included the experience of a spontaneous New Orleans “Second Line”, complete with decorated parasols, or even some unscheduled swing dancers. Sometimes it’s hard to tell who is having more fun, the performers or the listeners!
The West Market Street Stompers are:
Doug Finke – leader, arranger, trombone
Charlie Niehoff – trumpet
Dave Klingman – clarinet
Lonnie Ragan – piano
Greg Walker – guitar and banjo
Sonny Stephens – bass
Bruce Morrow – drums
